Run your mouse over the avatar you are intending to use and let me know the file type (JPEG, GIF, etc) and current size ( eg-1024x1024p). Then we'll go from there.

The forum has just been updated and that could possibly be a reason the avatar isn't uploading (change of maximum file size). If you want, send it to me at wadozo@tormail.org and I can re-size it for you, then send it back. Another option is to download Gimp (for free) and you could re-size it yourself. Up to you.

Thanks mate. I'd say it just needs to be re-sized.  :)

Something's hosed with the forum avatar upload. Tried to upload a different avatar and it said it's too large or not an avatar file while switching me to the "no avatar" option. Uploaded the exact same one I was using before and it still wouldn't accept it. Same error.

Who to contact about this?

JP, An animated avatar such as the one I'm using, needs to be re-sized to 53 x 53p/m for it to work. I'm sure yesterday I read a vendor had to re-size his avatar (not animated) to 64 x 64p/m so it would fit. Nomad bloodbath posted this morning that an Admin had to reset the avatar qualities section which seem to have been altered during the recent upgrade. He sent a PM to DPR to have it done. I can re-size your avatar for you if you wish  by sending it to me at wadozo@tormail.org or I could send you an animated GIF which I have stored, ready to go? Just let me know if I can help?  :) :)

Cool. I got it thanks. Yeah doesn't have to be symmetrical, just has to have the largest pixel side be 64. Thanks for the tip.

Is there any real answer on this? I've tried 65x65, 64x65, 64x64, 66x64, 32x32, even 5x5 .. gifs, jpegs.. nothing works. Just says its too big and/or not an avatar.

Mate, 65 x 65 pixels is the max. size (JPEG, GIF, etc) with this new SMF software upgrade now running the Forum. For animated GIF'S, the max. size is 53 x 53 pixels. There should be no reason it won't upload other than the pixel size is too big or the file size is too big. I just tried it and they definitely work if they are the correct size. I can send you one if you like, or even a couple you can choose from. If you want one, send me your Tormail address and I'll get it over to you. :)

Changing the size worked for me, but it's good to know it doesn't have to be symmetrical.  I'll try my again cause i don't like the way it looks with all sides the same.

wetdog is correct in saying it doesn't have to be symmetrical, however for still images, the max. length of any side can be 65 pixels and for animated GIF's, the max. length of any side must be 53 pixels.

Thanks Wadozo, but I'm ok to make an avatar. I've already tried 65 x 65 .. I've actually tried 5 x 5 with max compression which was less than 300 bytes so file size or dimensions is not the issue.

Maybe it will be ok after the next update!

Mate to be perfectly honest, it is the issue. Before the recent update, the allowed file size was larger than the current allowable size. It's a permission that has to be altered by an Admin to change it. They have been made aware of this and are working on it and the many other bugs in the SMF software. I have no problems uploading an Avatar in the sizes I mentioned previously, nor has anyone who has asked me to re-size an image for them. Anyway.

Well.. I fixed it, but not by lowering the filesize. I increased it! I guess there must be a minimum size now.

Thanks all.
